Religious Instruction

The Department of Education and Training outlines that schools are to provide comprehensive information to assist parents to make an informed decision about their child’s participation in Religious Instruction (RI).

At Ashgrove State School, Christian Religious Instruction is available once per week for a 30 minute lesson. The year levels that participate in RI depends on the number of approved volunteers from local faith groups. Participation in RI is not compulsory. At any time, parents may provide written instruction to the principal to change their preference for their child to participate in or be withdrawn from RI.

The school has been provided with a Cooperative Arrangement signed by religious leaders of local faith groups. This agreement outlines that the Access Ministries Christian Religious Education (CRE) program and its associated materials is the only program that will be used during RI. The Access Ministries publications Trek (Lower Primary) and Search (Upper Primary) provides the curriculum for the RI program. Volunteers are required to strictly adhere to the approved curriculum in these workbooks. Attached below are the lesson aims from the Access Ministries Trek and Search workbooks. This information has been taken from the instruction manuals containing the lesson plans for both Lower Primary (aged 6-8 years) and Upper Primary (aged 8-10 years).

Participating Faith Groups in the Cooperative Arrangement
Catholic, Presbyterian, Uniting Church, Baptist,   Anglican.

Students are allocated to RI based on information provided by parents on the completed Application for Student Enrolment unless other written instructions have been provided to the school. Only students who have identified as one of the above faith groups will participate in religious instruction. If you are not a part of the above faiths, but would like your child to participate in this program, you can advise the school in writing. Students who are not participating in RI will be provided with Other Instruction in a separate supervised location. Other Instruction will relate to part of a subject area already covered in class and may include, but is not restricted to, wider reading, personal research and revision tasks. You will be notified of any changes to RI or Other Instruction.

You may wish to access the Department’s RI policy statement available at for further information.
